THE LOCATION AND ESTABLISHMENT OF DIBRU SAIKHOWA NATIONAL PARK

Dibru Saikhowa National Park is situated in between Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts of Assam, in the North-East regions. The Dibru Saikhowa National Park is established in 1999 and has an area of about 340 square kilometres. The Dibru Saikhowa National Park is bounded by the mighty Brahmaputra River and Lohit River in the North and Dibru River(is a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra River) in the South. The Dibru Saikhowa National park is one among of the nineteen Biodiversity Hotspot around the World. The area near the Dibru Saikhowa National Park was declared as the Dibru Saikhowa Reserve Forest in 1890. The National Park was declared as the Biosphere Reserve in 1997 with an area of about 765 square kilometres and also as Bird Area in 2004. The Dibru Saikhowa National park was declared as Wildlife Sanctuary with an area of about 650 square Kilometre in 1986, then, in 1995 added an area of about 340 square kilometre.

GEOGRAPHICAL AREA AND CLIMATE OF DIBRU SAIKHOWA NATIONAL PARK

Dibru Saikhowa National Park is mainly consists of tropical moist deciduous forest, moist mixed semi evergreen forest, grasslands, littoral and swamp forests, bamboo and canebrakes. The annual rainfall of Dibru Saikhowa National Park ranges from 2300 to 3800 mm. The Dibru Saikhowa National Park is at an elevation of 118 metre from the mean sea level.

 

In Dibru Saikhowa national Park, summer season starts from the month of May to August, in this time the climate goes to become hot and humid then, the monsoons starts from the month of June to September, it is the months of rainy seasons, the Dibru Saikhowa National Park gets flooded with water during this time and then Winter season starts from the month of November to April, during this season a cool climate occurs and the rivers of this region dry up, which is the best season to visit The Dibru Saikhowa National Park.

Feral Horses of The Dibru Saikhowa

The Dibru Saikhowa National Park is the home(habitat) to a large herd of Feral Horses(Equus ferus) since 1939(from the time of World War II-1939 to 1945). The Feral horses are another attraction of The Dibru Saikhowa National Park, which is famous for the population of Feral Horses. Originally these Feral horses were domestic horse, but these horses are popularly known as Wild Horse in different regions of the World. During the time of World War II these horses were left in this region by fighter. Since then these Feral Horses have been survive in the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. These Horses are mainly found in the Churkey Sapori (a place of attraction of The Dibru Saikhowa National Park) that is located in the mid of the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. ASSAM FAMOUS HUNALI BANDOR OR GOLDEN LANGUR IN THE DIBRU SAIKHOWA NATIONAL PARK

Another one animal i.e. Golden Langur (Trachypithecus geei) is called the key fauna of Dibru Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve of the Brahmaputra river valley and it is famously known as “Hunali Bandor” among the people of Assam. The endangered species Gangetic Dolphin (Platanista gangetica) is recognized by the Government of India as The National aquatic animal of India that is primarily found in the Ganges River and the mighty Brahmaputra River. Dibru Saikhowa National Park is mainly consists of tropical moist deciduous forest, moist mixed semi evergreen forest, grasslands, littoral and swamp forest, bamboo etc. Major flora that are found in Dibru Saikhowa National Park are mainly Dillenia indica, Terminal is myriocarpa, Dalbergia sissoo, Mesua ferrea, Bombax ceiba, Phragmites karka, Focus etc. and various types of shrubs and grasses are found in this area. Along with these 35 species of epiphytic orchids and 8 species of terrestrial orchids are recoded till now. Kekjori tree is an important and famous tree that belong in this area also.

One can reach the Dibru Saikhowa National Park by train and also from the airport. The nearest Airport to Dibru Saikhowa National Park is Mohanbari Airport situated in Dibrugarh district of Assam. It will take 1 hour to get on the bus or taxi from the Mohanbari Airport to Dibru Saikhowa National Park.

The nearest Railway station to Dibru Saikhowa National Park is Tinsukia railway station. It is about 45 kilometre from the gates of the Dibru saikhowa national Park. There are many daily buses going to and fro the Tinsukia Station to the Dibru saihowa National park.

In Dibru Saikhowa National Park, there are lots of place to see and to make the journey enjoyable. The tourists or visitors can stay in houseboat instead of hotel, which can be an amazing experience for them. So the visitors can go in Barekuri Village to see Hoolock Gibbon, can also go for birdwatching in Maguri Beel etc. People can play volleyball at the sandbanks of the National parks just for relax or fun.
