Airline in India and list of operational and defunct airlines from India-
Airlines in India:
India had bilateral air services agreements with 93 countries as on May 31 1999. Earlier, two public sectors and government controlled Airlines- Indian Airlines and Air India were disinvested of government equities, while Air India was disinvested by 60%, 51% of the Indian Airlines was disinvested. Aur India Limited is the major international carrier of the country. Air India owns a fleet of 26 aircraft consisting of six B-747-200, two B-747-300, seven B-747-400, three A 300-B4 and eight A 310-300 aircraft. It operates to 57 domestic station (including alliance Air operations) and 17 international stations in 14 countries.
Our capacity for Civil Aviation for international route increased from 150 thousands pessenger in 1950-51 to 3,436 thousands passengers in 1998. The cargo handling also increased from 3.2 thousands tonnes to 92 tonnes. Mostly international level cargo is transported by airlines. During April-December 2005, international and domestic cargo recorded a growth of 11.7% and 6.6 % respectively. This growth is the second highest in the world, next to China.
The number of domestic passenger increased from 3.03 thousands in 1950-51 to 11,547 thousands in 1999-2000 in 50 years and cargo from 36.9 thousand tonnes to 125 thousands tonnes for the same period. The domestic traffic grew by 24.2 percent in 2005 in comparison to 2004.
The Airport Authority of India maintains 92 civil airports and 28 defence airports. The handling capacity of the passengers by the airports increased from 178.7 thousands tonnes in 1973 to 699.0 thousands tonnes in 1998.
Presently, Air India has the fleet of 25 aircraft and Indian Airlines has 50 aircraft. With the help of some private airlines, our civil aviation sector is managing the air transport. The modernization and privatization of four major airports are being undertaken. The international airport in Delhi and Mumbai are being modernized and upgraded through private sector participation. In fact, airports are in favour for a major overhaul with the government all set to bring in private players in a big way to modernize and upgrade existing airports and also for construction of Greenfield projects. Proposal to setup Greenfield Airports in Navi Mumbai, Kannur in Kerala, Ladhowal near Ludhiana and Pakyong near Gangtok in Sikkim are in the pipeline. An international Greenfield airport has already been built and is operational in kochi.
Policy initiative taken by the government have had a marked impact upon airline traffic. The entry of low cost carriers offering no-frills flight which are 30 to 35 percent cheaper than the regular flight has led to the respectable growth of domestic and international traffic. Accordingly, the year 2005 witnessed commencement of new air services on low cost pattern. While the Air India and Air India Express have started services to Dacca, Dubai, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Los Angeles, Seoul, Sharjah, Singapore and Zorento, the Indian Airlines have commenced new services to Bangkok, Kabul, Kuala, Lumpur, Sharjah, Singapore and Yangon.
